Can gully erosion be put to any good use.?
Is there any way a gully eroded site can be converted or reclaimed, and used for some other meaningful things.?
Now,,, Let us look at it with a case at hand...
In a town where there is a big gully, and such a town is known for such a big gully, (A town like Nanka in Anambra State); the size of such a gully being as wide as 16 Football fields stacked side by side, and as deep as a 10-storied building..
When it rains, the rate of flow of water in the gully is almost the same as discharging six full water-tankers simultaneously within a minute through an opening as big as a 4m-diameter concrete pipe.
And I am asking, Is there a way this kind of gully and the water flowing through it at such a destructive rate can be converted to something useful.?laimed, and used for some other meaningful things.? Please Reply.

The conventional engineering approach to slope
ReplyDeletestabilization and erosion control usually relies solely
on structural components. Vegetation is rarely
included in engineering designs. The benefits of
vegetation in erosion control are poorly understood
among most Engineers. While engineered structures
provide immediate stabilization and erosion
abatement, they become progressively weaker over
time and do not adapt to changing site conditions.
Vegetation, though ineffective when first established,
becomes progressively more effective, adaptable,
and self-perpetuating over time. Vegetation also
improves water quality, reduces storm water run-off,
enhances wildlife and fisheries habitat, and also
improves aesthetics. A "Bio-Structural" approach to
erosion and slope stability problems; i.e.,
incorporating planned vegetational elements in
engineering designs, can be less expensive, more
effective, and more adaptable than purely structural
solutions.
Vegetation selected for "Bio-structural" design
elements should be native whenever possible. Plants
chosen should also be appropriate to the site, have
wide adaptability, favorable spread and reproductive
capability, superior control value, roots of high tensile
strength, and be available commercially.
Practically; (Structured Vegetation). Economic seeds
are planted in Cement bags filled with fertile soil.
These are well structured in a way to reduce d
velocity of runoff hence reducing d gully process.
Over time, these crops germinate into economic trees
which serve as a good vegetative cover and and can
be harvested from time to time.

The World bank in conjuction with the FG of Nigeria is trying to undergo erosion control projects in erosion prone states including Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River and Edo States.
ReplyDeleteThis project code named NEWMAP (New erosion and Watershed Management Project) has been on-going for some time now.
A general case study of erosion menace in these states has identified key erosion sites with priority sites itemized (5 sites per state).
However, the popular Nanka erosion site remains a big puzzle and wasn't included in the 5 priority sites from Anambra State.
From all indications, Nanka site has been marked as a tourist site with little remedial efforts, in order to reduce more harm.
U can get more information on the NEWMAP project from Anambra State Ministry of Environment, Awka.
