HOW TO CALCULATE THE MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR A KNOWN VOLUME OF CONCRETE


Material estimation includes sand, cement, coarse aggregate and steel for a particular mix design. Let us consider a mix design of 1:2:4 for our estimation practice. The dry volume of total materials required is considered as 1.54 times the wet volume of concrete. This is due to the voids that are present in sand and aggregates in dry stage. Therefore, for our calculation, we will consider the total volume of materials required as 1.54m3 for 1m3 of wet concrete.
a) Bags of cement required:
Volume of cement required for 1m3 of Concrete = (1 x 1.54) / (1 + 2 + 4) = 0.22m3
But the volume of one bag of cement = 0.0347m3;
Therefore, the number of bags of cement = 0.22 / 0.0347 = 6.34 bags of cement; Say, 7 bags.
b) Volume of Sand required:
Volume of sand required = (2 x 1.54) / (1 + 2 + 4) = 0.44m3 of sand.
c) Volume of Coarse Aggregate Required
Volume of Coarse Aggregate = (4 x 1.54) / (1 + 2 + 4) = 0.88m3.
d) Estimation of Reinforced Steel:
Quantity of steel required depends on components of structure, i.e. slabs, beams, columns, foundations, roads etc. To estimate the steel required, there are two methods:
The first method is, when we have the drawings available, we can calculate the total weight of steel required, and dividing it by the total volume of concrete for the different components.
This will give us the weight of reinforcement steel per cubic meter of concrete for the different components.
The second method is assuming the percentage of reinforcement for different components.
The following are the percentages of reinforcement steels generally required for the different components. Its values can vary from structure to structure, and can be assumed from past experiences of similar structure.
For slabs = 1.0% of concrete volume.
For Beam = 2% concrete volume.
For column = 2.5% of concrete volume.
For Reinforced concrete roads = 0.6% concrete volume.

CAUSES OF BUILDING COLLAPSE


Collapse of buildings is not new to Nigeria, neither is it only peculiar to Nigeria. Nevertheless, that will not stop us from taking critical look at the situation and finding a solution to it.
Collapse though can happen to any kind of building, but the casualties that usually follow the collapse of multi-storey buildings can be so terrible.
The collapse of storied buildings in Nigeria usually goes along with it, casualties which can be more up to 20.
But what really motivates multi-storey buildings?
Multistorey buildings are either built because of social status. There are places you get to, and all you would see are very high-rise buildings; so you wouldn’t want your building to be unnoticeable amongst them.
Commercial viability of a location can also make more people to build storied structures in the area because more people would clamour for space in the area.
Some locations are routes to a lot of places; so, high vehicular and human traffic is usually associated with such places, hence more commercial activities, and thus, the need for high-rise buildings.
There is always a tendency of man habiting very close to water because of the opportunity of controlling the waterways which can give opportunity for inter trade between nations. Their closeness to water naturally gave room for shipping ports in these areas, shipping port in turn promotes commercial activities, and commercial activities naturally generates heavy human traffic, and human being requires shelter for himself, his goods and services. So, buildings spring up in these places, and this brings about competition for the very few available spaces. Hence to meet with the demand, designers and building contractors will have to settle for multi-storey buildings because of the increasing unending economic value of these places.

Now, the soils in these areas are sandy and loose soil. They are not strong or compacted soils. Hence, the need for building construction professionals is usually high here. For most of these buildings, they dig long and strong piles foundation. However some few of these buildings still collapse.
 So, what causes the collapse of these buildings?

(1) The first problem is boycotting the professionals -
This issue had been over flogged both in print media and electronic media but it still persists. There is also a problem of egghead professionals that believe they know everything and are not ready to take advice from a colleague. There are known cases like that, which has turned awry.

(2) Contractors cutting corners -
Contractors trying to make gains at the expense of the lives of the users of the building are another problem that has to be tackled. There should be a check from policy makers to make sure specification is thoroughly adhered to by contractors.

(3) Human activities on building -
As insignificant as the human weight may seem to be; the moving up and down of the live loads and the dead load contributes over time in no small measure in wearing down the building. It will take long time though, but houses also expire, and in the case of the types of buildings we have in Nigeria, their lifespan is shorter than those in the civilized world.

(4) Inadequate foundation -
This is the most important part of a building. Unfortunately, a lot of people are not giving adequate attention to this and it is causing more problems. A registered Structural Engineer is very important to you if you are planning on building a strong and solid multi-storey building.

(5) Ageing Building -
Many do not know that buildings also have their life span. Most of the buildings in Lagos Mainland have spent 25 years and above; despite that, they are of shallow foundation and very low quality materials are used for them. As you lay your bed, so you shall lie on it. If you use low quality materials in building, and thereby thinking that you will cut cost, then also be expecting to park out of that building very soon.

ADVANTAGES OF ENGINE MOULDED BLOCKS OVER HAND MOULDED BLOCKS


Many people mould blocks onsite, using masons and labour to do the job, and claims it is cheaper but I don’t think so when you consider the advantages the engine moulded blocks has over hand-moulded.

(1) Engine moulded blocks compacts better than hand moulded blocks because of the greater pressure that is being applied by the engine. The sands are better compacted and give better products than the hand-moulded blocks.

(2) The engine-moulded blocks are faster to produce; therefore a deal of time is saved which helps in reducing the general project construction time.

(3) The engine-moulded blocks are also finished with a smoother surface which helps the bricklayer during laying and gives the building a nice look.

(4) The engine moulded blocks process helps to reduce theft. Imagine you having a limited time to monitor the forming of the blocks with engine, what would have taken one month to do will be done in three days or less depending on the capacity of the engine. You can take less time to monitor the materials used like cement, quantities of sand bought, and you can monitor the mix ratio/quality unlike the hand-moulded that will delay and create room for the labourers to steal the materials.

(5) Is easier to monitor the forming process as well

(6) The engine-moulded blocks with same mixture ratio as the hand-moulded blocks would be stronger due to better compacting.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GERMAN-FLOOR OR OVERSITE CONCRETE IN A BUILDING


Question: I’m trying to put up a two-flat Bungalow in Lagos. It is already at the foundation stage. I was advised to run German floor after foundation, but considering quotations I’ve got so far, it seems a bit expensive. Another person advised that I should rather spend such money to set blocks and do flooring later. My inquiry into other projects within the site revealed that not everybody did German floor after their foundation. Please, what is the importance of German floor?

Answer: Thank you Victor.
The importance of german floor or oversite concrete in a building can’t be overemphasized. There had been a lot of arguments on whether to use a german floor for building projects or not. I have also built too without a german floor in exceptional cases, but this is not the best practice.
On a very solid soil, most people tend to forgo german floor because of the cost of concrete, especially on a one-floor bungalow. However, you must not build in a waterlogged place or area susceptible to heavy settlement without doing german floor.
In other words, german floor is important and very necessary, if you can afford it, even on solid and non-problematic areas.
These are the importance:

(1) German floor stops water from percolating from the soil into the building. It reduces the movement of water from getting to the walls and floor, which may cause damp and result in algae growth around your walls. If the german floor is used with a membrane or nylon or cellophane spread to cover the floor before casting it will reduce water getting up greatly.

(2) The german floor is also a part of foundation; it should be seen as one of the structural elements that make your house to stand. Loads transmitted from the building are also received by the german floor before being transmitted to the foundation. In a raft foundation, it is inevitable to have german floor because you have to blend it with the strips coming from the foundation base, in order to form a mass of concrete that is monolithic and helps to stabilize the building.

(3) For stability. As was mentioned earlier, it is a part of the foundation, and it forms a stable base for both live loads and dead loads in the building. You should be confident while stepping on the floor by making sure you have a solid floor which can also sustain earth tremors or vibrations from machines in and around the building.

(4) When there is a movement in the soil, the german floor helps to redistribute the forces on the building, and spread same around the floor easily which may also help to sustain the building from collapsing.

(5) When there is cracking on the block wall, (for non major cracks) the german floor can serve as a breaking point that will stop blocks from extending crack lines into the other parts of the building; that is, if the crack is up, then it may not extend beyond the german floor towards the foundation, and if the minor crack is from blocks under the german floor, it may not extend beyond it except there is a major defect in foundation due to settlements or improper foundation.

(6) A well done german floor also helps in determining and correcting problems associated with levels when construction is on.
Before your builder cast the german concrete, you have to ask him to take the level of the building round to achieve an even plane which will make your house to come out better during construction.

ADVANTAGES OF ALUMINUM ROOFING OVER OTHER TYPES OF ROOFING


Though costly, the trend these days is to use aluminum roof to cover your house because of its advantages.

1. It is light.
Aluminum is comparatively very light .Conveying from one point to the other is easy. And it doesn’t add much weight to the building structure. The structural effect of it on a building is virtually nonexistent.


2, It is clean.
The roof is also very clean and easy to handle, you don’t need to wash or do some extra treatment on it.


3, It is not harmful.
Due to shortage of tap water, A lot of Nigerians drink rainwater dropped from the roof. For an asbestos roof, study has shown that drinking water from it may cause cancer, and for common zinc, it easily corrodes and particles from it also go along with the fetched water. Except during the process of installation, it is only when the roof is damaged by nails or others that you may experience leakage; but this can also be easily corrected.

Because of its non corrosive nature and ease of dismantling it lasts longer than most of other roofing materials.

The opportunity available to you in the building industry is limitless.
Suppliers are making a lot of money now than ever.
The steps you have to take to become one may actually be the easiest.
Depending on your target, you may not necessarily have the money before you begin to market a product and end up supplying same.
Most of the building materials company will be glad to have you as an individual with no money in your pocket, but with zeal, determination, and agility to market their products. A lot of them give fantastic commissions for every successful purchase made by your client.
To do this, you only need to walk into some of these companies and register as a marketer for them. They will gladly give you guidelines and steps to take in order to make sure you are successful.
A lot of people are already doing this, so it is not a new thing; and if people can be there and still doing it, then, that means they are getting paid for their efforts.
Quite a few people have met me on site to introduce one product or the other to me.

HOW TO START A CONSTRUCTION COMPANY WITHOUT A DIME.


We sit on and around wonderful opportunities that can turn our lives around and make us the millionaires we eagerly wish for. Quoting Samson Makinwa, chairman of Techo Quip Ltd, on the Wealth Platform of Vol no 3/09 the headline reads “it is easy to make money in Nigeria. There is money all over the streets, yet most people cannot see it”, I can’t but agree with these sayings.
The first thing you need to have before dabbling into the construction industry is the will, you need the determination to do it, and you must be patient; because it is unlike the other industries where you may have jobs to do throughout the whole year. Though your company could grow up to actually achieve that, but for a beginner, business may not come even for some months before the breakthrough.
The second step is to learn the trade. You can make friends with a contractor or a professional in the field with vast experience that you can understudy and learn from. He may actually be your friend, or a pure professional that you may have to contact and arrange a time to work for him in order to have an idea about how things are run.
The next step after some few months of training or understudying your mentor should be for you to start thinking of registering a company.  However, since you are starting with no money down, I will advise you liaise with an established and registered company to work with and write proposals, with this you will make an agreement with the business owner on profit sharing before you can finally stand on your own with your name, and organise your office.
What you should naturally do is to get an office, but your home address could be your office address, or you use a friend’s office temporarily.
Without the job, all the facilities you are running after would be a waste of time and resources, so I will advise you start writing proposals to different companies that may need your services; look for a brother, a church member and other people that could be of help in making sure your proposals pass through the right offices.
Then begin to strongly think of given yourself a proper packaging. I mean people loves to look at things at face value in this part of the world, so you can also meet their expectations by looking very good, and in the right frame of mind when you would be going for a presentation. Wear a suit or a corporate dress well ironed, if possible rent a car with a driver for that day. A man was able to secure a contract of hundreds of millions of naira because he was wearing a Rolex wristwatch he borrowed for a business meeting; same as for car, e.t.c.
Before the big jobs start coming, be a subcontractor to some major contractors, our dailies are filled with the advertisement for subcontractors from big time contractors. Check Tuesday Guardian newspaper and others. The money you make will help you to stand as a contractor ultimately later on, and you can be quoting for jobs directly.
Be articulate and bold, you need this if you are going to win any contract.
Find out where to source for equipments before bidding for any project; all projects have their own peculiarities. Do not bid for a project because you are desperate to get a job, else you might bite your fingers at the long run.
Pretend and present yourself exactly the way the client would like to see you and feel about you. The client won’t be happy to know you are a hungry man that needs their money to get out of poverty. He will also not be happy that he is given out a job of a big magnitude to somebody that has not handled a job of that size before. Avoid what will make the client to doubt your competencies.
Use professionals as business partners, and leverage on their expertise; just agree with them on a percentage sharing formula and you are on.
Source for loans from families and friends, especially when there are no interests, or that it is very low; but make sure you are working for an organisation that will pay you in time and that they have a record of prompt payments to their contractors.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS AND THEIR USES

Foundation of building, as the name implies, is the starting of a building construction on site. Types of building, nature of soil, and environmental conditions are the major determinant of the type of foundation you will use for your building.

1) Strip foundation- This is the most common type, it is mainly used where you have strong soil base and non-waterlogged areas. Most small buildings of just a floor are constructed with this type of foundation.
Depending on the structural engineer’s recommendation, the depth of your foundation could be from 600mm to 1200mm (mostly for small scale buildings). When the soil is excavated, a level at which the concrete will settle evenly is established, then concrete is poured. This may be from 150mm (6”) thick to 450mm (18”) thick, depending also on the type of building. After that, blocks are set round the trenches at the center of foundation; the foundation usually follows the block lines. The blocks are then laid to d.p.c level before another concrete is poured on top, this is the german-floor or oversite concrete. This type seems to be the cheapest.

2) Pad foundation- This is where isolated columns (pillars) are casted from the foundation to carry a slab at the top of the ground. This is mostly used when you want to make use of the under of building as parking space, or when the other space is not conducive to have foundation. Imagine you are planning to build a house across a flowing stream and you want a situation where you can use your boat to pass under the building because the stream is underneath. Then you may not need to dig foundation that would cut across the river; but just by applying columns (pillars) at the edge of the river like a bridge. These columns are thus isolated, and their foundations are referred to as pad.

3) Raft foundation- This is where you have concrete spread around your building from the base of foundation all through to the german-floor/oversite concrete/ground floor slab. It is mainly used in areas where the soils are sandy and loose. Most of the time, you spend more on this than the other previous two. It is also recommended in waterlogged areas, but with buildings of fewer storeys.
It has ground beams which shoots out from the foundation base, and is also attached to the ground floor slab to form a network of concrete embedded round the building space. The ground beams are usually from 600mm to 1200mm for low buildings.

4) Pile foundation- This is the most expensive and the strongest type of foundation. This requires specialist engineering to construct. The soil is bored deep down the earth, and filled with concrete to be able to support loads of multi-storey building on top. Most skyscrapers are constructed with this type of foundation. A high building in a waterlogged area may also require this type of foundation.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN HOUSE FROM A N10,000 SALARY

Anybody, no matter the stipends he receives as the take home pay, can actually build his own house. It takes just determination, knowledge and persistence. A lot of people today have increasingly come to find out that you don’t need your entire life savings just to get a home. Rather what you need is adequate planning and ability to know the difference between wishful thinking, reality and actually taking action. There are always a category of houses for every class of persons in the society.
First of all, you need to calculate the amount of your salary for 2 years and find 30% of the sum. Whatever you get, just meet your building professional and ask him what kind of building the 30% can cover for its foundation only. If you get that, then know it that you can easily build your house with that terribly miserably low salary you take home every month.
Assuming your salary is N10,000; for 2 years your total salary will be N240,000; and 30% of this will give N72,000. This can conveniently cover a 2 bedroom flat strip foundation.
But you think you can’t possibly save 30% of your income, because your salary is already too low. Let me tell you, from studies carried out, it had been known that no matter how extremely small a person received or how poor he is, 30% or even more of his money goes into what he can’t account for monthly. He just needed to sit down and take stock for a month, and he will see that he had been spending 30% and above on very unimportant things in his life.
Yes, I know cost of land is high, but that is because you don’t want to live the crowded and so called urban area for the outskirt.
You can also save for land if you put your mind on it. But if you already have one, then your dream of getting your own house will be faster than expected.
Within 10 years of determination, you will complete your project.

20 OF THE WORLDS' MOST AMAZING COINCIDENCES. NO. 1. JAMES DEAN'S CAR CURSE


In September 1955, James Dean was killed in a horrific car accident whilst he was driving his Porsche sports car. After the crash the car was seen as very unlucky.
a) When the car was towed away from accident scene and taken to a garage, the engine slipped out and fell onto a mechanic, shattering both of his legs.
b) Eventually the engine was bought by a doctor, who put it into his racing car and was killed shortly afterwards, during a race. Another racing driver, in the same race, was killed in his car, which had James Dean's driveshaft fitted to it.
c) When James Dean's Porsche was later repaired, the garage it was in was destroyed by fire.
d) Later the car was displayed in Sacramento, but it fell off its mount and broke a teenager's hip.
e) In Oregon, the trailer that the car was mounted on slipped from its tow-bar and smashed through the front of a shop.
f) Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while it was sitting on steel supports.

20 OF THE WORLDS' MOST AMAZING COINCIDENCES. NO. 2. A FALLING BABY, SAVED TWICE BY THE SAME MAN


In Detroit sometime in the 1930s, a young (if incredibly careless) mother must have been eternally grateful to a man named Joseph Figlock. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother's baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby's fall was broken and both man and baby were unharmed. A stroke of luck on its own, but a year later, the very same baby fell from the very same window onto poor, unsuspecting Joseph Figlock as he was again passing beneath. Henry Ziegland thought he had dodged fate. In 1883, he broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed suicide. The girl's brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and shot him. The brother, believing he had killed Ziegland, then turned his gun on himself and took his own life. But Ziegland had not been killed. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Ziegland surely thought himself a lucky man.
Some years later, however, Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the bullet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he decided to blow it up with a few sticks of dynamite. The explosion propelled the bullet into Ziegland's head, killing him.

The stories of identical twins' nearly identical lives are often astonishing, but perhaps none more so than those of identical twins born in Ohio.
The twin boys were separated at birth, being adopted by different families. Unknown to each other, both families named the boys James. And here the coincidences just begin. Both James grew up not even knowing of the other, yet both sought law-enforcement training, both had abilities in mechanical drawing and carpentry, and each had married women named Linda. They both had sons whom one named James Alan and the other named James Allan. The twin brothers also divorced their wives and married other women - both named Betty. And they both owned dogs which they named Toy.
Forty years after their childhood separation, the two men were reunited to share their amazingly similar lives.

In the 19th century, the famous horror writer, Egdar Allan Poe, wrote a book called 'The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'. It was about four survivors of a shipwreck who were in an open boat for many days before they decided to kill and eat the cabin boy whose name was Richard Parker. Some years later, in 1884, the yawl, Mignonette, foundered, with only four survivors, who were in an open boat for many days. Eventually the three senior members of the crew, killed and ate the cabin boy. The name of the cabin boy was Richard Parker.

In 2002, Seventy-year-old twin brothers have died within hours of one another after separate accidents on the same road in northern Finland.
The first of the twins died when he was hit by a lorry while riding his bike in Raahe, 600 kilometres north of the capital, Helsinki. He died just 1.5km from the spot where his brother was killed.
"This is simply a historic coincidence. Although the road is a busy one, accidents don't occur every day," police officer Marja-Leena Huhtala told Reuters. "It made my hair stand on end when I heard the two were brothers, and identical twins at that. It came to mind that perhaps someone from upstairs had a say in this," she said. (Source: BBC News)

"Your story about the Finnish twins is missing some details:
The first brother was killed by a lorry while riding his bike and crossing Highway-8. He apparently didn't notice the lorry in the snow blizzard. The second brother was killed by a lorry only two hours later while riding his bike and crossing Highway-8. The second brother couldn't have been aware of the first brother's death, as the police was still trying to identify the victim."

20 OF THE WORLDS' MOST AMAZING COINCIDENCES. NO. 7. THREE SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, ALL STOPPED BY THE SAME MONK


Joseph Aigner was a fairly well-known portrait painter in 19th century Austria who, apparently, was quite an unhappy fellow: he several times attempted suicide.
His first attempt was at the young age of 18 when he tried to hang himself, but was interrupted by the mysterious appearance of a Capuchin monk. At age 22 he again tried to hang himself, but was again saved from the act by the very same monk. Eight years later, his death was ordained by others who sentenced him to the gallows for his political activities. Once again, his life was saved by the intervention of the same monk. At age 68, Aiger finally succeeded in suicide, a pistol doing the trick.
His funeral ceremony was conducted by the same Capuchin monk - a man whose name Aiger never even knew.

In 1858, Robert Fallon was shot dead, an act of vengeance by those with whom he was playing poker. Fallon, they claimed, had won the $600 pot through cheating. With Fallon's seat empty and none of the other players willing to take the now-unlucky $600, they found a new player to take Fallon's place and staked him with the dead man's $600.
By the time the police had arrived to investigate the killing, the new player had turned the $600 into $2,200 in winnings. The police demanded the original $600 to pass on to Fallon's next of kin – only to discover that the new player turned out to be Fallon's son, who had not seen his father in seven years!

When Norman Mailer began his novel Barbary Shore, there was no plan to have a Russian spy as a character. As he worked on it, he introduced a Russian spy in the U.S. as a minor character. As the work progressed, the spy became the dominant character in the novel. After the novel was completed, the U.S. Immigration Service arrested a man who lived just one floor above Mailer in the same apartment building. He was Colonel Rudolf Abel, alleged to be the top Russian spy working in the U.S. at that time.

In 1953, television reporter Irv Kupcinet was in London to cover the coronation of Ellizabeth II.
In one of the drawers in his room at the Savoy, he found some items that, by their identification, belonged to a man named Harry Hannin.
Coincidentally, Harry Hannin - a basketball star with the famed Harlem Globetrotters - was a good friend of Kupcinet's. But the story has yet another twist. Just two days later, and before he could tell Hannin of his lucky discovery, Kupcinet received a letter from Hannin. In the letter, Hannin told Kucinet that while staying at the Hotel Meurice in Paris, he found in a drawer a tie - with Kupcinet's name on it!

While on a business trip sometime in the late 1950s, Mr. George D. Bryson stopped and registered at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. After signing the register and being given his key to room 307, he stopped by the mail desk to see if any letters had arrived for him. Indeed there was a letter, the mail girl told him, and handed him an envelope addressed to Mr. George D. Bryson, room 307.
This wouldn't be so odd, except the letter was not for him, but for room 307's just – previous occupant – another man named George D. Bryson.

John and Arthur Mowforth were twins who lived about 80 miles apart in Great Britain. On the evening of May 22, 1975, both fell severely ill from chest pains. The families of both men were completely unaware of the other's illness.
Both men were rushed to separate hospitals at approximately the same time. And both died of heart attacks shortly after arrival.

Morgan Robertson, in 1898, wrote "Futility". It described the maiden voyage of a transatlantic luxury liner named the Titan. Although it was touted as being unsinkable, it strikes an iceberg and sinks with much loss of life. In 1912 the Titanic, a transatlantic luxury liner widely touted as unsinkable strikes an iceberg and sinks with great loss of life on her maiden voyage. In the Book, the Month of the Wreck was April, same as in the real event. There were 3,000 passengers on the book; in reality, 2,207. In the Book, there were 24 Lifeboats; in reality, 20.
Months after the Titanic sank; a tramp steamer was travelling through the foggy Atlantic with only a young boy on watch. It came into his head that it had been thereabouts that the Titanic had sunk, and he was suddenly terrified by the thought of the name of his ship - the Titanian. Panic-stricken, he sounded the warning. The ship stopped, just in time: a huge iceberg loomed out of the fog directly in their path. The Titanian was saved.

While American novelist Anne Parrish was browsing bookstores in Paris in the 1920s, she came upon a book that was one of her childhood favourites – Jack Frost and Other Stories. She picked up the old book and showed it to her husband, telling him of the book she fondly remembered as a child. Her husband took the book, opened it, and on the flyleaf found the inscription: "Anne Parrish, 209 N. Weber Street, Colorado Springs." It was Anne's very own book.

In 1805, a French writer Émile Deschamps was treated to some plum pudding by the stranger Monsieur de Fortgibu.
Ten years later, he encountered plum pudding on the menu of a Paris restaurant, and wanted to order some, but the waiter told him the last dish had already been served to another customer, who turned out to be de Fortgibu.
Many years later in 1832 Émile Deschamps was at a diner, and was once again offered plum pudding. He recalled the earlier incident and told his friends that only de Fortgibu was missing to make the setting complete — and in the same instant the now senile de Fortgibu entered the room.

In Monza, Italy, King Umberto I went to a small restaurant for dinner, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, General Emilio Ponzia-Vaglia. When the owner took King Umberto's order, the King noticed that he and the restaurant owner were virtual doubles, in face and in build. Both men began discussing the striking resemblances between each other and found many more similarities.
a) Both men were born on the same day, of the same year, (March 14th, 1844).
b) Both men had been born in the same town.
c) Both men married a woman with same name, Margherita.
d) The restaurateur opened his restaurant on the same day that King Umberto was crowned King of Italy.
e) On the 29th July 1900, King Umberto was informed that the restaurateur had died that day in a mysterious shooting accident, and as he expressed his regret, he was then assassinated by an anarchist in the crowd.

When King Louis XVI of France was a child, he was warned by an astrologer to always be on his guard on the 21st day of each month. Louis was so terrified by this that he never did business on this day.
Unfortunately Louis was not always on his guard. On June 21st 1791, following the French revolution, Louis and his queen were arrested in Varennes, whist trying to escape France.
On September 21st 1791, France abolished the institution of Royalty and proclaimed itself a republic.
Finally on January 21st 1793, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine.

IMPORTANCE OF GULLY EROSION

Is there any way a gully eroded site can be converted or reclaimed, and used for some other meaningful things.?
Now,,, Let us look at it with a case at hand...
In a town where there is a big gully, and such a town is known for such a big gully, (A town like Nanka in Anambra State); the size of such a gully being as wide as 16 Football fields stacked side by side, and as deep as a 10-storied building..
When it rains, the rate of flow of water in the gully is almost the same as discharging six full water-tankers simultaneously within a minute through an opening as big as a 4m-diameter concrete pipe.
And I am asking, Is there a way this kind of gully and the water flowing through it at such a destructive rate can be converted to something useful.?laimed, and used for some other meaningful things.? Please Reply.

George Stratton wore inverted lenses to his face for over a week in order to prove that the brain adapts to new situations.

The American psychologist, George Stratton studied sensory perception during the 1890s. He was certain that the brain would correct imbalance and turn everything right side up.
He decided to try the theory himself.
He started living in an upside-down world and by the fourth day, was sick and disoriented. His vision however remained inverted. By day five, the images started turning right-side up and by day eight navigation of the upside-down world became easy to him. When he finally removed the glasses, the right-side up spun around him, and he couldn’t tell right from left till his brain adjusted again. He therefore concluded that the mind can adjust senses to meet environmental pressures.
The upside-down world is therefore not so confusing.
This serves as a big lesson to a great majority of us that refuse to embark on a promising project, just because of the fear of the unknown. We should know it now that, even without our knowing it, our minds can adapt to whole new situations.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE CELCIUS SCALE


At a glance, the Celsius scale makes more sense than the Fahrenheit scale for temperature measuring. But its creator, Anders Celsius, was an oddball scientist. When he first developed his scale, he made freezing 100 degrees and boiling point was 0 degrees. .ie. upside-down. No one dared point this out to him. So, fellow scientists waited until Celsius died to change the scale.
